1. Check for water damage

When browsing used caravans for sale, one of the first things you should be on the lookout for is water damage. Undetected water damage can lead to you having to sink a lot of money into repairs down the track. Known as the sly villain of second-hand motorhomes and caravans, water damage sneaks in and unleashes chaos on walls, floors, and ceilings.

So, before you commit, be sure to check all the usual places like corners, under windows and around the floorboards. Keep your eyes peeled for soft spots, mould, and bubbling paint. And if you smell anything funky, consider it a sign to move onto the next one!

2. Inspect the chassis and frame

When you're browsing used caravans for sale in Auckland, inspecting for a sturdy chassis is the secret to finding the right caravan. Skip this step, and your road trip dreams could crumble faster than a wet biscuit.

Think of the chassis as the backbone of your to-be caravan. If it's in a less than great state, you may be in for a rough ride. Things like rust, cracks and DIY looking repairs are an absolute no-go. When inspecting the chassis and frame, be sure to check that the tow hitch, coupling, and brakes are in good condition, too.

3. Test electrical and plumbing systems

When buying a caravan, you're technically investing in a little home on wheels. And nothing ruins the vibe more than being plunged into darkness at night and having a leaky loo. So, it's important to check that everything's working like a well-oiled machine, before you press 'go'.

Turn lights on and off and test the power sockets. Flush the toilet, and run the taps, checking for proper drainage. And don't forget to check the battery and wiring - heed warning from any signs of corrosion!

4. Assess the interior condition

When scoping out your second-hand caravan, don't be shy! Open every cupboard, sit on every seat, and have a good snoop around in every corner. A clean, well-maintained interior suggests a well-loved caravan you can trust to carry you comfortably for many adventurous kilometres.

Tired looking upholstery? Creaky cabinetry? Dangling fixtures? Red flags! While you’re inspecting the interior, seriously consider if the caravan has the features, layout, and space you need. These may include an open-plan design, a fixed bed, or multiple single beds.

5. Examine the tyres and suspension

A caravan's tyres and suspension contribute hugely to safe and comfortable road trips. So, don't buy a used caravan without thoroughly inspecting both!

When checking the tyres, start by checking the tread and looking for cracks. You'll also want to make sure they're not older than 5 years - irrespective of how many kilometres they've done. Next, check the suspension. If it's sagging, consider it a hard pass!

6. Review the caravan's service history

Don't let an immaculate interior fool you. Before going ahead with a used caravan purchase, be sure to investigate its service history. A caravan's service history serves as a health report. A regularly serviced caravan is usually a well-loved caravan and one that's unlikely to serve you nasty mechanical surprises down the road.

7. Verify Warrant of Fitness (WoF) and registration

Consider no WoF a no go! In New Zealand, a Warrant of Fitness (WoF) verifies the safety of the caravan’s tyres, lights, brakes, and structure. Caravans registered from 1 January 2000 onwards require an annual WoF. Caravans registered prior to this require a WoF every six months.
